The Optional Work Week, also called the Founders’ Dividend and implemented in 2025, is Talaris’s post-scarcity social policy. Citizens “receive a baseline dividend”: free baseline energy and transit, a housing and food credit at a basic standard, plus healthcare and education. Under the policy the legal full-time week was redefined to roughly 20 to 24 hours, with any hours beyond that “heavily regulated & premium-paid.” Non-citizens “may receive partial or no dividend” and remain “subject to older-style labor conditions.”
Culturally it has produced a “time-rich culture … weekdays blur with weekends; people schedule around personal rhythms.” The catch is that Vulpine Dynamics funds all of it voluntarily, an arrangement its critics call “Techno-Paternalism”: a privatized welfare state, and “a corporate perk entirely dependent on Vulpine’s goodwill, profitability, and IO Fox’s survival.” Those same critics argue it is a dystopia for everyone the dividend does not reach.
