IO Fox is a pop star and a scientist, the “Pop Star Scientist,” caught between public celebrity and a private obsession with Foxite. He came to wide attention with FORCE OF NATURE, and discovered Varyon in the weeks around its first anniversary.
Early life & education
IO grew up in a middle-class family in the Philippines, attending an all-boys Catholic school and then an international school. A National Geographic kid raised on cosmology and Air Crash Investigation, he first wanted to be an aerospace engineer before shifting to materials science after learning about global climate issues. He gave his first public performance singing at his First Communion in second grade, took up piano in fifth grade, and played violin in his high-school string orchestra.
He earned a perfect score on his IB exams and admission to MIT to study Materials Science and Engineering (Course 3). At MIT he joined the top a cappella group and launched his solo music career in his junior year, and by senior year the “Pop Star Scientist” name had stuck.
Rise
After MIT, IO engineered the VDMH-1 cold-fusion reactor at the University of Talaris, founded Vulpine Dynamics to commercialize it, discovered Varyon through Foxite, and engineered it into something usable with Varyolithography. The VARYON Dumbbells and the PWRBND followed, and PWR UP became a global movement.
Where he is now
On August 15, at PWR UP: LIVE II, he stopped the show and shouted at hecklers in the audience and then at the room around them. The clip spread as #ShadowCrash, Vulpine Dynamics stock fell hard, and two days later he posted “I won’t apologize for believing in us.” The full account is in Chapter 5 - BREAK.
Threats followed, and on August 22 he left Talaris for a rented house on the coast in the Philippines with no announcement and no location given. He slept for the first time since June. What he took from those eleven days, and said in a video on August 30, is that he had been carrying Varyon Syndrome the whole time he was telling the city there was nothing to carry, and that his conduct on the night of the Shadow Event came out of it. He apologized, and for the first time he closed a video without saying “PWR UP!”
As of September 7, 2026, he is back in Talaris and living well away from the lab and the venues, as he has told his staff to do. He runs a comparison study he opened on September 3, and he argues in public for an account of the syndrome he calls the Residual Field, which he is careful to describe as the thing he is testing rather than the thing he knows. He has stopped saying the technology is safe and has not said it is dangerous. Chapter 6 - The Return covers the whole stretch.
