Lore Summary
IO Fox is a pop star and a materials scientist who runs Vulpine Dynamics out of Talaris, a neon island city-state that runs on his cold-fusion reactor. In February 2026 he discovered Foxite, a pink crystal that comes out of that reactor as a byproduct, and through it Varyon: a field that living beings emit, which varies mass and gravity in proportion to emotion. He built the VARYON Dumbbells and the PWRBND on it, turned the PWR UP hook into a civic movement, and spent the spring as the most popular person in the city.
Then Talaris stopped sleeping. Varyon Syndrome spread, and the part that defeated every explanation offered for it was that people who have never touched the technology were getting it too. In August, IO stopped a concert to shout at his own audience, the city turned on him, and he left it. He came back eleven days later saying he had been affected the whole time, and with a theory about why.
Questions
Why did IO yell at the crowd at his show?
At PWR UP: LIVE II on August 15, protesters who had bought tickets began heckling him from the floor. He stopped the show and shouted for about ninety seconds, first at them and then at the room, and people who had nothing to do with the protest felt they were being addressed too. The clip spread as #ShadowCrash and the public turned on him within days. Two weeks later he said the outburst came out of the same thing the rest of the city has. Where did IO go, and what changed when he came back?
He left Talaris on August 22 after threats against him escalated, and spent eleven days in a rented house on the coast in the Philippines. He slept, the symptoms he had been blaming on the press eased, and he concluded he had been affected since the summer. He apologized on August 30, returned on September 2, and opened a study built around the idea that Varyon Syndrome depends on where you are rather than what you own. What is Varyon?
A field that living beings emit, which appears to be proportional to emotional intensity and focused intention. It cannot be measured directly. Everything known about it comes from watching what it does to Foxite, which glows and changes weight in its presence. IO Fox named it “because it seems to make things vary in mass, luminosity, and response.” Full entry: Varyon.
What is Foxite?
A pink crystalline scale that forms on cold-fusion hardware after long duty cycles. It is the only known material that reacts to Varyon, and PWRCORE-1 is the only reactor anywhere on a duty cycle long enough to yield it in usable quantity, so there is not much of it. Etch hexagonal channels into it and Varyon flows through it predictably, which is what makes every product in this archive possible. Full entry: Foxite.
What is Talaris, and what is the drama?
An island city-state west of Palawan, founded as a US-Philippine special zone in 1973 and autonomous since the 1990s. Near-zero corporate taxes, banking secrecy, and fast-track research approvals. It is the first city on Earth running on cold fusion, and its residents get a corporate-funded dividend that made full-time work optional.
The drama is that all of it is paid for voluntarily by one private company, Vulpine Dynamics, which also owns the power grid, employs the man who invented the technology, and is running the only study into Varyon Syndrome there is. What is wrong with everyone in Talaris?
Since June, the city has been reporting insomnia, volatility, heightened empathy and impulsivity, vivid dreams and nightmares, and public episodes the press calls “collective mood storms.” It has a name, Varyon Syndrome, and no accepted cause. Bloodwork, MRIs, and neurological scans all come back normal.
The reason the obvious explanation does not work: people who have never owned a Varyon product are getting it too. IO Fox has an account that starts from that, the Residual Field, and a study running since September 3 to find out whether it holds.
Is the technology dangerous?
Nobody has demonstrated either that it is or that it is not. Vulpine Dynamics points to the absence of a proven causal link and has kept its products on sale, while moving its own staff away from the lab and the venues. The protest movement wants everything suspended until somebody can explain what is happening. IO Fox stopped calling the technology safe on August 30 and has not called it dangerous either.
Who are the protesters outside his shows?
A movement that formed in late July and has not settled on a name for itself. They demonstrate outside PWR UP events and want Varyon technology suspended until somebody can explain Varyon Syndrome. They were a fringe concern until #ShadowCrash. Support for them has grown sharply since, and IO’s apology has not stopped the demonstrations, on the grounds that nothing has come off sale.
What is PWR UP?
A hook from a song that got away from the song. PWR UP PUP released in April 2026, and within a fortnight the phrase was a greeting, then a salute, then the name of a concert series and a movement. Full entry: PWR UP.
