The Residual Field is IO Fox’s proposed account of Varyon Syndrome, put forward at the start of September 2026 and not confirmed by anything. The claim is that Varyon does not simply disperse once the people generating it have gone home. In spaces where large numbers of people have generated a great deal of it, chiefly PWR UP venues, it accumulates, and anyone inside such a space is exposed to it regardless of whether they own a product or have ever touched one.
IO has been careful in public about what he is claiming. He calls it the explanation he is testing rather than the explanation, and he has said that his reason for naming it at all is that a study is easier to run against a stated position than against a hunch.
What it would account for
The objection that sank every earlier theory is that people who have never owned a Varyon product report the same symptoms as people who use one daily. A field that sits in a place rather than in a product takes that objection and turns it into a prediction, which is that exposure should track location rather than ownership.
The proposal makes two further predictions that can be checked without measuring anything directly. Symptoms should be more common near sites of heavy past use than far from them, and they should ease when somebody leaves the area, on a timescale of days rather than hours.
The second prediction is where the idea came from. Chapter 6 - The Return covers the eleven days IO spent on the coast in the Philippines and what he says happened to him there.
Why it is not settled
Nobody can measure Varyon directly. The field is known only through its effects on Foxite, and no instrument exists that reads ambient Varyon in a room the way a meter reads temperature. That leaves the proposal resting on the geography of reported symptoms, which is evidence of a kind that is difficult to separate from where people who go to concerts happen to live.
The comparison study running across Talaris since September 3 is designed against exactly that problem, and one week of it answers nothing. Critics of Project Resonance have made the same objection to the new study that they made to the old one, which is that Vulpine Dynamics is investigating Vulpine Dynamics.
Terminology
Varyon Syndrome is the name for what people are experiencing, and it is the term used by the press, by the public, and by the company. The Residual Field is IO’s name for what he thinks is causing it. The two are not interchangeable, and nothing published here treats the second as established.
