Varyon Syndrome is the public name for a symptom cluster that has been spreading through Talaris since June: insomnia, volatility, heightened empathy and impulsivity, vivid dreams and nightmares, and the public episodes the press has taken to calling “collective mood storms.” The name gives the pattern a label without accounting for any of it.
No cause has been established. Media overexposure, mass hysteria, and some unidentified Foxite toxicity were all put forward over the summer, and each one ran aground on the same fact: people who have never touched a Varyon product are reporting the same symptoms.
Since September, IO Fox has been arguing for an account of the syndrome that starts from that fact rather than running aground on it. He calls it the Residual Field, and he presents it as a position he is testing rather than as a finding.
Project Resonance
In July, IO Fox opened Project Resonance, a Vulpine Dynamics internal study gathering data from affected people. Standard diagnostics, including bloodwork, MRIs, and neurological scans, “all come back normal.” The only anomalies the study has found are psychological: “elevated empathy, impulsivity, and emotional sensitivity.”
Eight weeks of data have produced no mechanism. Critics of the study point out that the company running it is the company selling the products, and Vulpine has not answered that objection except by continuing to publish the null results.
A second study opened on September 3 and takes the opposite approach, sorting participants by how close they live and work to sites of past PWR UP events rather than by what is wrong with them. IO has declined to characterize its first week beyond saying that the results are early. The design, and the objections to it, are set out under Residual Field.
The protests
Public unease organized in late July into a protest movement, which has not settled on a name for itself and which the press has not named either. Its demand is that Varyon technology be suspended until someone can explain what is happening, and it has been demonstrating outside PWR UP events since.
Theirs was a minority position through the summer. The Shadow Event on August 14–16, and the clip of IO shouting at his audience that came out of it, moved a great deal of public sympathy toward them in the space of a week. See Chapter 5 - BREAK.
The movement has not called off its demonstrations since IO’s video of August 30, in which he said he had been affected himself. Its position is that an admission is not a suspension, and that nothing about what is on sale has changed. Chapter 6 - The Return covers the video and what followed it.
