Leaving Talaris
The threats that begin circulating at the end of the Shadow Event week do not thin out. By the third week of August the people around IO Fox have stopped describing them as online noise. There are cars outside his house at night, photographs taken from a distance, and a delivery to the lab that Vulpine Dynamics security has never described in public. The protest movement disavows all of it and goes on demonstrating.
He leaves on August 22. Vulpine says only that he is away, gives no location, and declines to say for how long. His accounts go quiet, which they have not done since he started posting.
He spends the next eleven days in a rented house on the coast in the Philippines, some hours from the nearest city, in a region with no PWR UP history of any kind. The company confirms the country afterward rather than at the time.
What happens there
He sleeps. By his own account he sleeps through most of the first two days, and the sleeping is what he returns to whenever he is asked about those eleven days, because he has not done it since June.
The rest goes with the sleeping. He says that the irritability, the sense that every question is an attack, and the flatness in between all ease over roughly four days, and that they ease without him doing anything to make them stop.
The reasoning he lays out afterward runs from there. For two months he has been attributing his own state to the press, to the protesters, and to a release schedule he set himself. None of those follow him to the coast, and none of them let up either, since he is reading the same coverage on the same phone. What changes is where he is standing. By the end of the trip he has concluded that whatever Varyon Syndrome is, he has been carrying it since the summer along with everyone else in Talaris, and has spent that time telling the city there is nothing to carry.
The apology
On August 30 he posts an eleven-minute video, unedited and shot on a phone in the house. It is the only thing he has released in this era that has no music in it.
He says that he was affected, that he was affected on the night of the Shadow Event, and that he spent months dismissing reports of a thing he was in the middle of. He apologizes to the audience he shouted at, by name where he has names, and to the protesters for how he characterized them. He does not say the technology is safe, he does not say it is dangerous, and the video ends without the “PWR UP!” that has closed every video before it.

“I was inside the thing I was telling you wasn’t there. That is the whole apology. Everything else I say from here I have to prove.”
Reception splits along the lines that are already there. The reading with the most support behind it is that an admission arriving two weeks after the clip, and only once the share price has fallen, is worth less than one arriving before either. Against that, with fewer people behind it, sits the observation that nobody else in the city has produced any account of their own conduct at all.
The return
He is back in Talaris on September 2. He has not moved back into the lab, and on his instruction neither has anyone else who works there.
The testing
Since September 3, Vulpine has been running a comparison study across Talaris that sorts participants by how close they live and work to sites that have held PWR UP events. It is designed the other way around from Project Resonance, which gathers data from people who are already affected and asks what is wrong with them.
One week in, IO will not characterize the results beyond saying that they are early. He has established a research site outside the city, told Vulpine staff to sleep and live away from the lab and the venues, and given a name to the thing he believes is happening, the Residual Field.
The company’s products remain on sale.
