Varyon is, in IO’s words, named “because it seems to make things vary in mass, luminosity, and response.” He hypothesizes it as “a new form of energy emitted by living beings, proportional to emotional intensity,” or “the radiant field generated by living beings.” Its study is Varyology.
The discovery
The eureka moment came when IO Fox intentionally “completed” a hexagonal glyph through motion. His dumbbell “suddenly became lighter” and the Foxite solution flashed bright pink.

What is known
Varyon cannot be measured directly. Everything known about it comes from watching what it does to Foxite, whether that is the glow, the glyph formation or the shift in mass. Varyology has never measured it on its own terms, only inferred it from what the crystal does.
The open question
Since June, Talaris has seen a spreading cluster of symptoms that the public calls Varyon Syndrome. Whether Varyon has anything to do with it is unresolved, and the obvious objection to any link is that people who have never used a Varyon product are affected too.
