June–July 2026. No single. This is the stretch in which Talaris stops sleeping.
June: the reports start
The first accounts arrive in early June and are easy to dismiss individually: people exhausted, people emotional in public in ways they are not used to, people having vivid dreams and then, increasingly, nightmares. Social feeds that had been full of glowing selfies in May start carrying erratic behavior instead.
Vulpine Dynamics attributes it to excitement and media overexposure. That explanation holds up for about two weeks. What breaks it is that the reports keep coming from people who have never owned a Dumbbell or a PWRBND, and in some cases from people who have never been to a PWR UP event.
IO Fox takes the reports seriously in public and promises an investigation.
July: the name and the study
By early July the press has a label for it. Varyon Syndrome gives the pattern a name without accounting for any of it, and the name sticks anyway. Outlets link Varyon exposure to the whole cluster: insomnia, volatility, heightened empathy and impulsivity, vivid dreams and nightmares, and the public episodes they start calling “collective mood storms.”
IO opens Project Resonance, an internal Vulpine study gathering data from affected people. Bloodwork, MRIs, and neurological scans all come back normal. The only anomalies anyone finds are psychological: elevated empathy, impulsivity, and emotional sensitivity. The study runs through July without producing a mechanism.
Three explanations are in circulation by the end of the month, and all three run aground on the non-users. Media overexposure does not explain someone who has never seen a PWR UP event. Mass hysteria does not explain the consistency of the symptom list. Foxite toxicity does not explain people who have never been near Foxite.
The protests
Public unease organizes in late July into a protest movement. It arrives without a name for itself and the press has not supplied one either, which does nothing to slow it down. Its demand is that Varyon technology be suspended until somebody can explain what is happening, and it begins demonstrating outside PWR UP events.
Vulpine keeps its products on sale. Its position is that no causal link has been demonstrated, which is accurate and satisfies nobody, and the objection that starts being raised in reply is about who is running the study.
